Magnitude 4.7 earthquake strikes near Ambon, Indonesia

Just 52 minutes ago, a 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck near the city of Ambon, Indonesia. The tremor was recorded in the evening on Thursday 29 October 2020 at 8.28 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface.

The event was filed by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service at VolcanoDiscovery identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.7 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Towns or cities near the epicenter that are likely to be affected include Ambon (pop. 355,600) at a distance of 115 km with weak shaking, and Amahai (pop. 47,700) at a distance of 151 km with very weak shaking.
