A magnitude 4.6 earthquake was reported only 12 minutes ago by the German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam (GFZ), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter in the evening on Saturday 31 October 2020 at 9.59 pm local time. The magnitude, exact epicenter location and depth of the quake are likely to be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service at VolcanoDiscovery identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.6 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Towns or cities near the epicenter that are likely to be affected include Leh (pop. 37,500) at a distance of 61 km with weak shaking.
