Light magnitude 4.0 quake hits 54 km south of Gorgān, Iran in the morning

A shallow magnitude 4.0 earthquake was reported in the morning near the town of Dāmghān, Iran.
According to the Iranian Seismological Center (IRSC), the quake hit on Saturday 21 November 2020 at 8.42 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Dāmghān (pop. 67,700) located 26 km from the epicenter, Shahrud (pop. 131,900) 42 km away, Qarnābād (pop. 2,000) 52 km away, and Gorgān (pop. 244,900) 54 km away.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Behshahr (pop. 93,500) located 93 km from the epicenter.
