4.4 quake Southern India 22 Nov 1.45 am (GMT +5:30)
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. Weak shaking might have been felt in Seoni (pop. 101,400) located 19 km from the epicenter, Barghāt (pop. 11,200) 35 km away, Amarwāra (pop. 13,300) 43 km away, Tirodi (pop. 8,900) 46 km away, Katangi (pop. 15,300) 48 km away, Chhindwāra (pop. 134,800) 48 km away, Hīrāpur Hamesha (pop. 6,100) 62 km away, and Nagpur (pop. 2,228,000) 98 km away.
