Significant magnitude 5.4 quake hits 162 km south of Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands in the morning

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake near Carolinas Heights was reported only 9 minutes ago by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth of 84 km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Tuesday 24 November 2020 at 10.00 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Carolinas Heights (pop. 300) located 135 km from the epicenter, San Jose Village (pop. 15,000) 136 km away, and Saipan (pop. 48,200) 162 km away.
