4.9 quake 26 Nov 5:51 am (GMT -6)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 occurred early morning on Thursday 26 November 2020 at 5.51 am local time near Masachapa, Nicaragua, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 27 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service at VolcanoDiscovery identified a second report from the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. Weak shaking might have been felt in Masachapa (pop. 5,000) located 54 km from the epicenter, San Rafael del Sur (pop. 29,800) 64 km away, Carlos Fonseca Amador (pop. 5,200) 67 km away, Villa El Carmen (pop. 5,200) 67 km away, El Rosario (pop. 3,000) 68 km away, Leon (pop. 144,500) 96 km away, Managua (pop. 973,100) 99 km away, and Masaya (pop. 130,100) 104 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
