4.3 quake 27 Nov 1:44 pm (GMT -6)
Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN) reported a magnitude 4.3 quake in Mexico near Santa Maria del Mar only 24 minutes ago. The earthquake hit around noon on Friday 27 November 2020 at 1.44 pm local time at a shallow depth of 16 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service at VolcanoDiscovery identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.3 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Santa Maria del Mar (pop. 800) located 71 km from the epicenter, Santa María del Mar (pop. 800) 71 km away, San Mateo del Mar (pop. 5,700) 72 km away, Laguna Santa Cruz (pop. 400) 72 km away, El Pacifico (pop. 400) 72 km away, and Salina Cruz (pop. 76,600) 76 km away.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Santo Domingo Tehuantepec (pop. 37,400) located 93 km from the epicenter, and Juchitan de Zaragoza (pop. 74,800) 97 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
If you felt it, report it through our site or app right now!
