Small 3.2 quake hits near San Juan Bautista, San Benito County, California, United States

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude 3.2 quake in the United States near San Juan Bautista, San Benito County, California, only 6 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Sunday 27 December 2020 at 11:05 am local time at a very shallow depth of 2.2 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.2 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in San Juan Bautista (pop. 2,000) located 2 miles from the epicenter, and Aromas (pop. 2,700) 5 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Prunedale (pop. 17,600) located 7 miles from the epicenter, Hollister (pop. 37,500) 10 miles away, Watsonville (pop. 53,600) 11 miles away, Gilroy (pop. 53,200) 11 miles away, Interlaken (pop. 7,300) 11 miles away, and Salinas (pop. 157,400) 12 miles away. In San Jose (pop. 1,026,900, 38 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
