5.4 quake Philippines Sea, 34 km east of Yilan, Taiwan, 9 Jan 7:35 pm (GMT +8)
An earthquake of magnitude 5.4 occurred only 15 minutes ago 34 km east of Yilan, Taiwan, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 60 km beneath the epicenter near Yilan, Taiwan, early evening on Saturday 9 January 2021 at 7:35 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Yilan (pop. 94,200) located 34 km from the epicenter, Keelung (pop. 397,500) 56 km away, Taipei (pop. 7,871,900) 66 km away, and Banqiao (pop. 543,300) 70 km away.

VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
