A magnitude 4.8 earthquake near Nafpaktos, Aitoloakarnania, West Greece, Greece, was reported only 8 minutes ago by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Greece. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter after midnight on Wednesday 13 January 2021 at 12:09 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Kastraki (pop. 910) located 15 km from the epicenter, Glyfada (pop. 480) 20 km away, Lidoriki (pop. 840) 20 km away, Nafpaktos (pop. 13,400) 21 km away, Kamarai (pop. 1,200) 27 km away, and Thérmo (pop. 2,000) 27 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.

Weak shaking might have been felt in Antirrio (pop. 1000) located 29 km from the epicenter, Aigio (pop. 20,400) 34 km away, and Patrai (pop. 168,000) 39 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
