A moderately shallow magnitude 3.0 earthquake was reported early morning near Pāhala, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake hit on Friday 15 January 2021 at 5:50 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 21 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.0 as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Pāhala (pop. 1,400, 7 miles away), Naalehu (pop. 870, 17 miles away), Volcano Village (pop. 2,600, 18 miles away), Fern Forest (pop. 930, 23 miles away), Hawaiian Ocean View (pop. 4,400, 27 miles away), Mountain View (pop. 3,900, 29 miles away), Hawaiian Paradise Park (pop. 11,400, 37 miles away), and Hilo (pop. 43,300, 40 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
