A shallow magnitude 3.1 earthquake was reported in the afternoon near Concord, Contra Costa County, California, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake hit on Thursday 21 January 2021 at 4:48 pm local time at a shallow depth of 9.7 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.1 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Concord (pop. 128,700) located 1 miles from the epicenter, Pleasant Hill (pop. 34,800) 2 miles away, Walnut Creek (pop. 68,900) 5 miles away, Bay Point (pop. 21,500) 5 miles away, Martinez (pop. 38,100) 7 miles away, Lafayette (pop. 25,800) 8 miles away, New York of the Pacific (pop. 69,400) 9 miles away, and Antioch (pop. 110,500) 12 miles away.
