4.3 quake 22 Jan 8:57 am (GMT +2)
According to the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the quake hit on Friday 22 January 2021 at 8:57 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4. Other agencies reporting the same quake include German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.5, and European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Agia Marina (pop. 440) located 43 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Palekastro (pop. 1,100) located 51 km from the epicenter, Sitia (pop. 8,700) 57 km away, Karpathos (pop. 2,200) 65 km away, Elounda (pop. 2,200) 80 km away, Aghios Nicolaos (pop. 11,400) 85 km away, and Ierapetra (pop. 12,400) 96 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
