Japan was shaken near Shizunai-furukawachō, Hidaka-gun, Hokkaido, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.3 only 12 minutes ago, NIED reported.
5.3 quake 23 Jan 2:39 pm (GMT +9)
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 111.3 km beneath the epicenter near Shizunai-furukawachō, Hidaka-gun, Hokkaido, Japan, early afternoon on Saturday 23 January 2021 at 2:39 pm local time. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Shizunai-furukawachō (pop. 22,400) located 30 km from the epicenter, Obihiro (pop. 173,900) 76 km away, Otofuke (pop. 40,900) 83 km away, Tomakomai (pop. 174,800) 98 km away, Chitose (pop. 92,900) 104 km away, Kitahiroshima (pop. 62,400) 119 km away, Iwamizawa (pop. 85,100) 125 km away, and Ebetsu (pop. 134,000) 129 km away.
