4.2 quake 23 Jan 7:47 am (GMT -6)
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Golfito (pop. 6,800) located 20 km from the epicenter, Corredor (pop. 7,100) 27 km away, El Palmar (pop. 4,500) 27 km away, Canoas (pop. 4,600) 27 km away, and Puerto Armuelles (pop. 11,700) 28 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include San Vito (pop. 4,000) located 45 km from the epicenter, La Concepcion (pop. 17,700) 49 km away, and David (pop. 82,000) 69 km away.
