An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 occurred in the evening on Saturday 23 January 2021 at 9:07 pm local time near Santiago, Provincia de Santiago, Santiago Metropolitan, Chile, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate depth of 110 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by INPRES, which listed it as a magnitude 5.6 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Chicureo Abajo (pop. 18,000) located 48 km from the epicenter, Santiago (pop. 4,837,300) 49 km away, Puente Alto (pop. 510,400) 50 km away, La Pintana (pop. 201,200) 53 km away, Lo Prado (pop. 104,300) 55 km away, San Bernardo (pop. 249,900) 58 km away, Lampa (pop. 29,300) 69 km away, Buin (pop. 55,400) 70 km away, Los Andes (pop. 56,900) 72 km away, and Peñaflor (pop. 65,500) 74 km away.
