4.9 quake 24 Jan 8:29 pm (GMT +11)
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake hit on Sunday 24 January 2021 at 8:29 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 35 km. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Port-Olry (pop. 2,000) located 60 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Luganville (pop. 13,400) located 112 km from the epicenter, and Sola (pop. 1,200) 114 km away.
