Magnitude 4.3 earthquake strikes near Golfito, Provincia de Puntarenas, Costa Rica

A magnitude 4.3 earthquake near Golfito, Provincia de Puntarenas, Costa Rica, was reported only 9 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Wednesday 27 January 2021 at 2:26 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.3 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Puerto Armuelles (pop. 11,700) located 64 km from the epicenter, Golfito (pop. 6,800) 66 km away, Corredor (pop. 7,100) 80 km away, Canoas (pop. 4,600) 80 km away, San Vito (pop. 4,000) 95 km away, Ciudad Cortés (pop. 3,900) 98 km away, and La Concepcion (pop. 17,700) 99 km away.
