Moderate magnitude 4.9 earthquake 122 km southeast of Kokopo, Papua New Guinea

An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 occurred only 25 minutes ago 122 km southeast of Kokopo, Papua New Guinea, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 62 km beneath the epicenter near Kokopo, Kokopo District, East New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea, early morning on Sunday 21 February 2021 at 6:19 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the United States Geological Survey which listed the quake at magnitude 4.9 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Kokopo (pop. 26,300) located 122 km from the epicenter.
