An intermediate magnitude 4.4 earthquake was reported early evening near Curico, Provincia de Curicó, Maule Region, Chile.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Wednesday 3 March 2021 at 6:50 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 105 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the United States Geological Survey, which listed it as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Molina (pop. 28,800) located 14 km from the epicenter, Curico (pop. 102,400) 14 km away, Rauco (pop. 8,600) 24 km away, Chimbarongo (pop. 17,400) 42 km away, Santa Cruz (pop. 33,300) 53 km away, Talca (pop. 197,500) 61 km away, San Javier (pop. 22,400) 78 km away, and Linares (pop. 69,500) 95 km away.
