Small tremor of magnitude 3.0 just reported 20 miles southwest of Eureka, California, United States

A magnitude 3.0 earthquake near Eureka, Humboldt County, California, USA, was reported only 7 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 1.6 miles beneath the epicenter early afternoon on Thursday 4 March 2021 at 2:52 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.0 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Indianola (pop. 820) located 16 miles from the epicenter. In Humboldt Hill (pop. 3,400, 18 miles away), Pine Hills (pop. 3,100, 20 miles away), Eureka (pop. 27,000, 20 miles away), Fortuna (pop. 12,000, 22 miles away), Arcata (pop. 17,800, 26 miles away), Bayside (pop. 17,100, 26 miles away), and McKinleyville (pop. 15,200, 27 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 4.2 quake in Peru near Minas de Marcona, Provincia de Nazca, Ica, only 20 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the afternoon on Thursday 4 March 2021 at 4:31 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 44 km. Authorities in Greece are calling Thursday evening's quake, which occurred at .8.38 pm local time, a "surprise earthquake" as it is as strong as the main earthquake that occurred the day before. Usually aftershocks are less intense than the main event, however one of the country's most notable geologists, Efthimios Lekkas, said that another part of the fault line had become activated.
