Just 14 minutes ago, a 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Reuleuet, Aceh, Indonesia. The tremor was recorded early morning on Friday 5 March 2021 at 6:36 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface.
The event was filed by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.7 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Reuleuet (pop. 40,400) located 50 km from the epicenter, Sigli (pop. 17,500) 56 km away, and Meulaboh (pop. 35,100) 83 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Bireun (pop. 25,800) located 87 km from the epicenter, Banda Aceh (pop. 250,800) 103 km away, and Banda Aceh (pop. 250,800) 103 km away.

Authorities in Greece are calling Thursday evening's quake, which occurred at .8.38 pm local time, a "surprise earthquake" as it is as strong as the main earthquake that occurred the day before. Usually aftershocks are less intense than the main event, however one of the country's most notable geologists, Efthimios Lekkas, said that another part of the fault line had become activated. Luckily, this occurred far from densely populated areas. Lekkas is still hesitant to say this latest quake can be characterized as an actual aftershock. ... read all
