A magnitude 4.5 earthquake near San Antonio de los Cobres, Departamento de Los Andes, Salta, Argentina, was reported only 9 minutes ago by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate to considerable depth of 179 km beneath the epicenter early afternoon on Thursday 11 March 2021 at 3:48 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In San Antonio de los Cobres (pop. 4,000, 87 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
