Moderate magnitude 4.4 quake hits 60 km west of Manapouri, New Zealand in the afternoon

4.4 quake 12 Mar 5:26 pm (GMT +13)
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Friday 12 March 2021 at 5:26 pm local time at a shallow depth of 26.4 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Manapouri (pop. 250) located 60 km from the epicenter, and Te Anau (pop. 2,100) 69 km away.
