Significant 5.3 quake hits near New Plymouth, New Plymouth District, Taranaki, New Zealand

An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 occurred only 26 minutes ago 39 km southwest of New Plymouth, New Zealand, Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near New Plymouth, New Plymouth District, Taranaki, New Zealand, after midnight on Sunday 14 March 2021 at 12:58 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Opunake (pop. 1,500) located 11 km from the epicenter.
In Eltham (pop. 2,200) located 29 km from the epicenter, Hawera (pop. 11,100) 34 km away, New Plymouth (pop. 49,200) 39 km away, and Waitara (pop. 6,300) 50 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Patea (pop. 1,300) located 59 km from the epicenter, and Wanganui (pop. 40,300) 110 km away.
