Moderate magnitude 4.9 quake hits 97 km northeast of Le Moule, Guadeloupe in the morning

An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 occurred only 13 minutes ago 97 km northeast of Le Moule, Guadeloupe, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.

The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Le Moule, Guadeloupe, in the morning on Friday 26 March 2021 at 9:19 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Saint-François (pop. 12,700) located 95 km from the epicenter, and Le Moule (pop. 22,700) 97 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Les Abymes (pop. 63,100) located 115 km from the epicenter, and Baie-Mahault (pop. 30,600) 122 km away.
