A shallow magnitude 3.3 earthquake was reported early morning near Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Tuesday 30 March 2021 at 6:09 am local time at a shallow depth of 16 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.3 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Volcano Village (pop. 2,600) located 19 miles from the epicenter. In Mountain View (pop. 3,900, 23 miles away), Hilo (pop. 43,300, 25 miles away), Hawaiian Acres (pop. 2,700, 27 miles away), Waikoloa (pop. 4,800, 31 miles away), Waimea (pop. 9,200, 31 miles away), Hawaiian Paradise Park (pop. 11,400, 31 miles away), and Holualoa (pop. 8,500, 32 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
