Moderate magnitude 4.4 earthquake 73 km northwest of Wanaka, New Zealand

Just 7 minutes ago, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Wanaka, Queenstown-Lakes District, Otago, New Zealand. The tremor was recorded around noon on Monday 5 April 2021 at 1:23 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 8.3 km below the surface.

The event was filed by New Zealand's Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Haast (pop. 280) located 31 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Wanaka (pop. 4,400) located 73 km from the epicenter, and Arrowtown (pop. 2,200) 94 km away.
