Significant magnitude 5.0 earthquake 4 km southeast of Taupo, New Zealand

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake near Taupo, Taupo District, Waikato, New Zealand, was reported only 10 minutes ago by New Zealand's Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in New Zealand. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth of 87.1 km beneath the epicenter early evening on Monday 5 April 2021 at 7:37 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Taupo (pop. 22,500) located 4 km from the epicenter, Turangi (pop. 3,400) 40 km away, Tokoroa (pop. 14,300) 58 km away, Rotorua (pop. 65,900) 66 km away, Rotorua (pop. 65,900) 66 km away, and Kawerau (pop. 6,700) 86 km away.
