Magnitude 4.2 earthquake strikes near Hualien City, Hualien, Taiwan

A shallow magnitude 4.2 earthquake was reported in the evening near Hualien City, Hualien, Taiwan.
According to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CEIC), the quake hit on Wednesday 7 April 2021 at 9:19 pm local time at a shallow depth of 20 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Hualien City (pop. 350,500) located 19 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Puli (pop. 86,400) located 66 km from the epicenter, Lugu (pop. 19,600) 87 km away, Zhongxing New Village (pop. 25,500) 95 km away, Nantou City (pop. 105,700) 96 km away, and Taichung (pop. 1,040,700) 100 km away.
