A magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Kos, Dodecanese, South Aegean, Greece, was reported only 23 minutes ago by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Greece. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 13.7 km beneath the epicenter after midnight on Thursday 8 April 2021 at 12:54 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Nikia (pop. 48) located 12 km from the epicenter, Kardamena (pop. 1,900) 35 km away, Kéfalos (pop. 2,500) 35 km away, and Antimacheia (pop. 2,300) 38 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Kos (pop. 19,200) located 49 km from the epicenter, Kalymnos (pop. 12,300) 56 km away, Turgutreis (pop. 16,500) 62 km away, Bodrum (pop. 39,300) 68 km away, and Rhodes (pop. 56,100) 96 km away.
