An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred in the evening on Monday 19 April 2021 at 8:22 pm local time near Shikotan, Sakhalin Oblast, Russia, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 50 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Shikotan (pop. 2,100) located 24 km from the epicenter, Yuzhno-Kurilsk (pop. 6,500) 76 km away, Otrada (pop. 3,200) 79 km away, and Nemuro (pop. 31,200) 88 km away.
