Magnitude 4.4 earthquake strikes near Fayzabad, Faīẕābād, Badakhshan, Afghanistan

A magnitude 4.4 earthquake near Fayzabad, Faīẕābād, Badakhshan, Afghanistan, was reported 30 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate to considerable depth of 195.4 km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Friday 23 April 2021 at 11:50 am local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.

A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Jurm (pop. 12,100, 35 km away), Ashkāsham (pop. 12,100, 55 km away), Ishqoshim (pop. 26,000, 63 km away), Fayzabad (pop. 44,400, 70 km away), and Farkhār (pop. 10,500, 96 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
