Small magnitude 3.0 quake hits 22 miles southwest of Sunnyside, Washington, United States in the afternoon

A shallow magnitude 3.0 earthquake was reported in the afternoon near Sunnyside, Yakima County, Washington, USA.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Saturday 24 April 2021 at 5:30 pm local time at a shallow depth of 8.8 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.0 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Bickleton (pop. 88) located 12 miles from the epicenter. In Toppenish (pop. 9,000, 16 miles away), Mabton (pop. 2,300, 20 miles away), Sunnyside (pop. 16,300, 22 miles away), and Yakima (pop. 93,700, 31 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
