Moderate yet deep magnitude 5.2 quake hits 47 km southeast of Norsup, Vanuatu late at night

Just 16 minutes ago, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Norsup, Malampa Province, Vanuatu. The tremor was recorded late at night on Saturday 1 May 2021 at 10:50 pm local time, at an intermediate to considerable depth of 181 km below the surface.

The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.3.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Lakatoro (pop. 710) located 44 km from the epicenter, Norsup (pop. 3,000) 47 km away, and Luganville (pop. 13,400) 104 km away.
