An earthquake of magnitude 3.0 occurred only 7 minutes ago 3 miles northeast of Chico, California, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 8.3 miles beneath the epicenter near Chico, Butte County, California, USA, in the morning on Saturday 1 May 2021 at 11:26 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.0 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Chico (pop. 90,300) located 3 miles from the epicenter, Durham (pop. 5,500) 7 miles away, Paradise (pop. 26,500) 10 miles away, and Mountain View (pop. 11,300) 13 miles away. In Thermalito (pop. 6,600, 20 miles away), Orland (pop. 7,600, 21 miles away), Oroville East (pop. 8,300, 24 miles away), and Yuba City (pop. 66,900, 44 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
