Moderate 4.2 quake hits near Ayutla de los Libres, Guerrero, Mexico

Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN) reported a magnitude 4.2 quake in Mexico near Ayutla de los Libres, Guerrero, only 22 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Wednesday 5 May 2021 at 3:10 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 35 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in El Cortijo (pop. 2,000) located 1 km from the epicenter, Cruz Quemada (pop. 1,700) 4 km away, Ayutla de los Libres (pop. 15,400) 6 km away, and Tecoanapa (pop. 4,300) 13 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Cruz Grande (pop. 11,800) located 31 km from the epicenter, San Marcos (pop. 13,300) 35 km away, Chilapa de Alvarez (pop. 31,200) 67 km away, Tixtla de Guerrero (pop. 22,800) 69 km away, and Chilpancingo (pop. 187,300) 73 km away.
