Moderate magnitude 4.5 quake hits 53 km southeast of Kegen, Kazakhstan around noon

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 4.5 quake in Kazakhstan near Kegen, Raiymbek District, Almaty Oblysy, 32 minutes ago. The earthquake hit around noon on Thursday 6 May 2021 at 1:07 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.

Our monitoring service identified a second report from the United States Geological Survey which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kegen (pop. 10,000) located 53 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Ak-Suu (pop. 10,800) located 77 km from the epicenter, Karakol (pop. 70,200) 88 km away, and Tyup (pop. 13,400) 91 km away.
