Moderate magnitude 4.9 earthquake 49 km east of Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Just 22 minutes ago, a 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck near Nuku'alofa, Tongatapu, Tonga. The tremor was recorded early evening on Friday 7 May 2021 at 7:46 pm local time, at an intermediate to considerable depth of 194 km below the surface.

The event was filed by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.0 earthquake. A third agency, the United States Geological Survey, reported the same quake at magnitude 5.0.
