An earthquake of magnitude 3.7 occurred early evening on Saturday 8 May 2021 at 6:55 pm local time near Redondo Beach, Los Angeles County, California, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 7.9 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.7 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Hermosa Beach (pop. 19,900) located 3 miles from the epicenter, Manhattan Beach (pop. 35,800) 3 miles away, Redondo Beach (pop. 68,200) 3 miles away, Torrance (pop. 148,500) 6 miles away, Hawthorne (pop. 88,500) 7 miles away, Gardena (pop. 60,400) 8 miles away, Inglewood (pop. 111,700) 10 miles away, and Carson (pop. 93,300) 10 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Long Beach (pop. 474,100) located 16 miles from the epicenter, and Los Angeles (pop. 3,971,900) 18 miles away.
