A magnitude 3.5 earthquake near Hawthorne, Mineral County, Nevada, USA, was reported only 13 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 5.2 miles beneath the epicenter around noon on Sunday 9 May 2021 at 12:26 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.1.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Mina (pop. 160) located 16 miles from the epicenter. In Tonopah (pop. 2,500, 40 miles away), and Hawthorne (pop. 3,300, 43 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
