Moderate magnitude 4.8 quake hits 29 km southeast of Mati, Philippines in the morning

An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred only 12 minutes ago 29 km southeast of Mati, Philippines, Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported.

The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 59 km beneath the epicenter near Mati, Davao Oriental, Davao, Philippines, in the morning on Wednesday 12 May 2021 at 11:02 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.8 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Bobon (pop. 4,500) located 13 km from the epicenter, Mati (pop. 105,900) 29 km away, Batobato (pop. 9,700) 38 km away, Manay (pop. 20,300) 47 km away, and Lupon (pop. 27,200) 47 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Samal (pop. 43,500) located 85 km from the epicenter, San Mariano (pop. 18,700) 90 km away, Davao City (pop. 1,212,500) 95 km away, Magugpo Poblacion (pop. 233,300) 99 km away, and Panabo (pop. 84,700) 99 km away.
