Magnitude 4.3 earthquake strikes near Labuan, Kabupaten Pandeglang, Banten, Indonesia

According to Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, the quake hit on Sunday 23 May 2021 at 8:29 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.3 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Labuan (pop. 33,600) located 68 km from the epicenter, and Pandeglang (pop. 92,300) 98 km away.
