An earthquake of magnitude 3.6 occurred only 11 minutes ago 30 miles southwest of Hilo, Hawaii, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 4.7 miles beneath the epicenter near Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA, in the morning on Sunday 23 May 2021 at 8:36 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.6 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Volcano Village (pop. 2,600) located 10 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Mountain View (pop. 3,900) located 19 miles from the epicenter, Hawaiian Acres (pop. 2,700) 19 miles away, Ainaloa (pop. 3,000) 21 miles away, Orchidlands Estates (pop. 2,800) 22 miles away, Hawaiian Paradise Park (pop. 11,400) 25 miles away, Hawaiian Beaches (pop. 4,300) 25 miles away, and Hilo (pop. 43,300) 30 miles away.
