Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.5 reported 66 km northwest of Kashgar, China

A magnitude 4.5 earthquake near Kashgar, Xinjiang, China, was reported 38 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 1 km beneath the epicenter late at night on Monday 24 May 2021 at 10:22 pm local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Kashgar (pop. 274,700) located 66 km from the epicenter.
