Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.8 reported 55 km southwest of Atico, Peru

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 4.8 quake in Peru near Atico, Provincia de Caraveli, Arequipa, 32 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Tuesday 8 June 2021 at 2:21 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.

A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake as well. A third agency, the United States Geological Survey, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Atico (pop. 200) located 55 km from the epicenter.
