Moderate magnitude 4.3 earthquake 21 km southwest of Banda Aceh, Indonesia

Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported a magnitude 4.3 quake in Indonesia near Banda Aceh, Kota Banda Aceh, Aceh, only 11 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early afternoon on Thursday 17 June 2021 at 2:28 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 127 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.3 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Banda Aceh (pop. 250,800) located 21 km from the epicenter, and Sabang (pop. 24,500) 51 km away. In Sigli (pop. 17,500, 89 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
