Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.4 just reported 50 km southwest of Manta Ecuador, Ecuador

A very shallow magnitude 4.4 earthquake was reported around noon near Manta Ecuador, Cantón Manta, Provincia de Manabi, Ecuador.

According to the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN), the quake hit on Thursday 17 June 2021 at 12:40 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 1 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Manta Ecuador (pop. 183,200) located 50 km from the epicenter, and Montecristi (pop. 18,400) 53 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Jipijapa (pop. 35,900) located 66 km from the epicenter, Sucre (pop. 15,300) 81 km away, Santa Ana (pop. 12,800) 85 km away, and Caracas (pop. 37,100) 98 km away.
