The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 5.1 quake in Nicaragua near Jinotepe, Departamento de Carazo, only 14 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early evening on Wednesday 21 July 2021 at 7:28 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 50 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Masachapa (pop. 5,000) located 56 km from the epicenter, San Rafael del Sur (pop. 29,800) 67 km away, Diriamba (pop. 35,000) 86 km away, Jinotepe (pop. 29,500) 89 km away, Ciudad Sandino (pop. 50,000) 98 km away, Managua (pop. 973,100) 103 km away, and Leon (pop. 144,500) 106 km away.
