Just 35 minutes ago, a 3.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA. The tremor was recorded in the afternoon on Wednesday 21 July 2021 at 4:10 pm local time, at a moderately shallow depth of 20 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.7 earthquake.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Pāhala (pop. 1,400) located 3 miles from the epicenter, and Volcano Village (pop. 2,600) 21 miles away. In Hawaiian Ocean View (pop. 4,400, 23 miles away), Mountain View (pop. 3,900, 32 miles away), Hawaiian Paradise Park (pop. 11,400, 40 miles away), Hilo (pop. 43,300, 43 miles away), Holualoa (pop. 8,500, 44 miles away), and Kailua Kona (pop. 12,000, 47 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
